New Year's eve

So I am currently in CT, at my Aunt Lori's house. We set out yesterday morning from Mass. and arrived in West Haven just after 12 o'clock. We made a stop at Aunt Kathy's, which was nice. Uncle Billy was nowhere to be found. We didn't stick around too long, as Grandma wanted to hit the Christmas Tree Shop on the way to Trumbull. She absolutely loves to shop! Once we got here, we were pleased to find a lobster dinner waiting for us. This was very tasty. I gave out Christmas gifts, which went over well, my aunt and uncle especially liked the candy box with a basset hound on it (sporting a sparkly Santa hat). They have two bassets here, Chelsea and Mona. Chelsea is older, but the smaller and smarter of the two. She doesn't seem much like a basset at all really. Mona is a very big dog, though she doesn't seem too fat. Both dogs are pretty calm and friendly.

Today we are supposed to go to Danbury to have New Years with Uncle Bob and Debbie. However, it's snowing here; there is supposed to be four to six inches by day's end. Figures, now there's snow when we want to get somewhere. Bob made us hotel reservations, I hope we don't have to cancel. I forgot how dramatic they get about snow here. Everyone acts as though it is the end of all creation when it snows. Hopefully we'll be able to get where we need to go.

that's all for now, more later.

Note to Self: Forgive typos. ZoomText isn't working so I can't see what I'm doing.
Need to get this computer worked out.

Well, I am all packed up and ready for the travels tomorrow. Mom Grandma and I went shopping today, got a few nice pairs of jeans and a warm sweater. Hopefully the trip will go well.

Mom is really going to miss me. She is working tomorrow so I will be getting up early to see her. I am going to miss her too. Things are tough in this family right now, and while I can understand this, its hard to see her sad like this. I want so much to be able to take her away from here for awhile. Unfotunately things don't always work out. She will be home for New Years, and dad will surely be sleeping. She said she is doing okay but okay shouldn't be good enough. I wish he'd wake up, and be more like himself. In recent years, my father has made a dramatic turn. He is so cold, and opresses whoever he can with his misery. She deserves better. I wish I could take her with me, on this trip, to Boston once I graduate. She tells me to never settle, reach for the stars, go out and live life to the fullest and have a blast. I just know she wants it to. If only I could make this happen for her. She means the world to me, she's been there more than anyone else, and I love her to pieces.

I don't want to look back on this time soneday and wish things had been different. I want to cherish every moment I have with those who are precious to me.

This is my goal for the new year...appreciate every moment and make it count.

Saturday - a day of surprises

I woke up this morning to Nicole still not feeling well. She didn't want to go home, but we had to get the house ready for Grandma to come Sunday morning so she knew she had to. The rest of us had to load the car while she pouted. She didn't forget to remind me that I promised to give her my Japanese maple tree though...we were honestly relieved when she left. The tension left with her.

At two we headed out to pick up baked goods for the church's bread ministry. we picked up the goods, brought them to the church, and made a few other deliveries to people we know who aren't working.

Once we got home we were both pretty beat. My eyes were burning, so I was planning on laying down for a bit before cleaning and wrapping gifts. Mom took a drive to Tedeschi's and Dad was about to take some bread to the neighbors' house when the phone rang...it was mom. She called to tell u s that Grandma was at Tedeschi's! We weren't expecting her until the next morning! We scrambled to get dressed and spray Febreeze just as she pulled into the driveway. What a shocker! It was nice to have here come early though; she is calm and quiet and fun to be around. We sat around most of the evening catching up and snacking on holiday treats. We also caught a rescreening of the opening ceremony for the Olympics at Beijing. We'd never seen it in August; it was beautiful. They had a giant LED screen on the floor and thousands of perfomers dressed in illuminated suits. The perfomers ran about the floor, making shapes of birds and streams of light, and a sparkling bird's nest.

Once everyone went to bed I wrapped some gifts for Grandma. Still more to do, including gifts for the CT family.

We also chatted a bit about travel plans next week. It's going to be quite busy, as we're going everywhere, but it will be fun. Here's the plan so far:

Tuesday: Leave Massachusetts. Stop in West Haven CT for a visit with aunt Kathy and uncle Bill. After that, continue on to Trumbull and spend the night with aunt Lori and company. :) I have a cute dog bone shaped christmas tin that I'm filling with goodies for their two dogs, Chelsea and Mona (bassets).

Wednesday: New Year's eve, which we will be spending with uncle Bob and Debbie. There we shall ring in 2009, and I hear they've booked a room for us at the Ethan Allen hotel.

Thursday: After New Years festivities, we shall head out towards Pennsylvania.

Friday-Monday: Time in PA, which shall be spent visiting aunt Marlene and Andy, Tish and company, shopping, and going to a casino. :)

Tuesday: taking Amtrak train back home from the Trenton NJ station. I LOVE train travels!

From there its just half a week until my trip to Smithtown for my new partner! :)

Friday - Day after Christmas

Mom recieved money to buy sweaters for Christmas, so we got up early and went out, just the two of us. She found two sweaters, and we bought some gifts for aunts and uncles in CT. Apparantly, in addition to my trip to PA, I learned that Grandma and I will be spending a few days in CT for new years, so I wanted to be prepared with gifts for everyone.

After shopping, we had lunch at McDonald's, and then we went to the movies, to see Marley and Me! I was super excited to see this movie, ever since I read about it on John Grogan's website in August.

I have to admit, the movie was pretty good, and accurate to the book. When I first heard that the leading roles were to be played by Owen Wilson and Jennifer Anniston, I was curious to see how they'd do, and it was a success. They were both brilliant. The dogs in the film were adorable, and most of the first half of the film was hilarious. The dog's they used tore up life with such vigor and happiness that I bet John Grogan himself was pleased. His antics reminded me of Franklyn.
The later stages of Marley's life were sad. Since I read the book I knew it was coming, but that didn't stop the tears when he reached the end. The whole theater was crying, you could hear it. I think alot of people didn't expect such a sad end, because the previews make the film look like a cute funny film. Quite a few people with this mindset brought young children to the film, which was definitely a mistake. There should almost be a disclaimer or something. These parents had to convince their sobbing children that it was just a movie, and Marley really lived. The thing that struck me about this, is that it really did happen to this particular dog, and happens all the time. It really captured the loss that a pet owner goes through (mom was in tears, because this is what we went through with Sammie). Parts of the film are cute and wonderful, though it was pretty blunt about the end of the dog's life. It mimics the idea behind the book, that life with a dog is full of ups and downs. There are hard times, but the love of a doggy companion makes it worthwhile. They did end the film pretty quick after Marley dies, perhaps if it included the response Grogan got to sharing his dog's life, it would have been a little brighter. I think they should have ended the film with John starting the book, or something. It would have made the message more obvious to the audience.

Like I said, I think the film was great overall. I wasn't shocked by the ending, but could understand why others would be. For me, the audience reaction is really a testament to how much these furry children can mean to us. A few people remarked while walking out that Marley reminded them of their own dog, and that is the point behind the book and the film. Grogan's message really reaches out to anyone who has ever loved a dog. They're not perfect, but that's just what makes them so unique and important to us. Of course saying goodbye is hard, but they make our lives better by sharing it. I'm very glad I got to see it. I wonder what John Grogan himself thought of it...

It was nice to get out of the house, and away from the tension for a day. Neither one of us wanted to deal with the dramatics that were no doubt taking place at home. Nicole's money ran out and she decided to charge us for the food she cooked for Christmas dinner, which the parents were not happy about. She usually takes whatever she can get out of everyone.
Once we got home, it was pretty much time for mom to head to her Friday night job at the store. I camped out in the livingroom making scrapbook pages and eating a dinner of stuffed mushrooms. Nicole wasn't feeling good, and stayed in the bedroom. A pretty uneventful night, but I think everyone was just exhausted from the week, and ready for things to go back to normal.

Making up for a few crazy days!

Wooo its been a ride these few days! Haven't had time to sign online at all since Christmas Eve. Still need to check my email...that will be a treat.

I'll do my best to make up for lost time here.

Wednesday night:
We finished cooking food and had an elaborate dinner of chicken wings, stuffed bread, sandwiches and so much else. We opened our Christmas Eve gifts from Nicole, her family tradition of "Christmas Jammies." I must say that it's a cute idea and wish we had done it when I was a kid. My jammies had snowmen on a red and white background, with soft red slippers.Everyone wore their jammies to bed.

I heard a lovely story on TV about a "praying Santa" in either North or South Carolina. This man started playing Santa shortly after his father died. The father was big into christmas and always played santa and taught his family the real meaning of Christmas. Once the son began following his father's tradition, he felt the Lord calling him to this Santa ministry. He now sees children every year, and in addition to talking with the childrean about their wishes, he prays with them. He gets a very positive reaction from the children and their parents. I think this story is just wonderful. It really brings Christmas full circle, and connects the Santa tradition to the love and joy Jesus brings.

Thursday - Christmas Day
Today was certainly an interesting Christmas. Woke up to the phone ringing; it was Morgan thanking Mike and I for the gifts we sent. I would have gone back to bed, but a few people were already up and moving. Laura was up, which pretty much meant the day was started. The living room had been "Christmas-ified". Laura was all excited and intrigued. I must admit, it was neat waking up Christmas day with a kid in the house. She is 11 though and while she insisted on leaving cookies and milk out for Santa, was skeptical and asking questions. Dad responded to this beautifully and went on his laptop to pull up that "Yes Virginia, there is a Santa Clause" article. Dad tried to show Laura that the Christmas spirit is a mindset, an expression of love and peace. It was beautiful.

This beauty did not last long however. Nicole meanered out into the kitchen as mom was cooking. She was the last person out of bed, andtends to get a little cranky in the morning. She patted herself on the back as she handed Laura a gift bag with a black scarf she stayed up all night making for her. With Nicole, everything is a competition, and she had to make sure that Laura knew that she was the best gift giver. While Nicole was getting her coffee together, dad suggested that Laura could open her stocking while we were all waking up and making waffles (this in a tradition in our household). Nicole had a fit about this; she wanted to record EVERYTHING, and made her put the stocking away. This did not sit right with dad, and he called her on it...and things escalated, quickly. In seconds, they were both screaming their heads off, Nicole was crying, quite a mess. On Christmas, of all days. I had to retreat to my room to pull myself together to keep from saying anything. It almost ruined Christmas for everyone. Nicole was quite dramatic (she thrives on this kind of attention it seems). After awhile, we managed to get everyone to calm down and get back to normal.

We then gathered into the livingroom, and did gifts. My parents did great with Laura's gift, and everyone seemed happy. The gifts I made went over well; mom loved the cranberry dish, and dad was touched by the electric blanket. During breakfast, Dad read the Christmas story from the bible.

My parents are just wonderful! They gave me some lovely gifts, including the PERFECT gloves for working with a dog harness, some thermals for training in NY, sweaters, and a few DVDs. I really was touched by their thoughfulness.

Laura enjoyed herself. She made out like a bandit and retreated after our pancake breakfast (they were easier than waffles) to the livingroom to play with her goodies. By nightfall, she was bored again, and became quite smug. She and Nicole were pulling a bit of an attitude after I called Laura out on making a rude comment. So things were good for the most part, but I think when it comes down to it, we're trying too hard to make a family out of a group of strangers. Nobody can undo the years of missed opportunities. And people take their holiday traditions very personally; to have a Christmas together, we would have to compromise a bit.

All in all, I enjoyed Christmas with my family. My parents always make things nice and happy around the house, and I love being around mom especially. A few things were less than perfect, but its in the past. This was an important Christmas for me, as I get older Christmas is changing. I am becomeing more and more greatful of the love and joy I share with my family. None of us are perfect, but we share the joy of the season together. We know the true reason for the season, and it keeps our hearts full this time of year.

Christmas Eve!

Christmas is here, and I am here with my family hanging out! All is good!

As of yesterday my stomach was still a little iffy, but I've decided not to eat until our little party thing tonight. We are making an assortment of tasty treats for a little family party tonight. Nicole wants us to each open one gift tonight. I know why but I've been sworn to secrecy. :)

There was a debate about going out to eat for Christmas but it looks like it's not going to happen. That's the thing about this family, everything changes all the time. Once someone gets an idea in their head, that's all it takes. :)

Kristen has been emailing me the past few days, and she seems to be in good spirits but does not have enough to eat, I am worried about her. Mom and dad want her to contact them but she still hasn't. All we can do is pray that she turns around, there's only so much support one person will accept.

I hope everyone has a great Christmas tomorrow.

The family arrived around one today. Laura pretty much set up her gamecube right away, and has been playing it ever since. I think she is on her fifth game by now?

Nicole made an awesome wreath for the front door out of pinecones. It's really pretty. She also gave me a Christmas gift early, a very pretty green ring white stones around it. So awesome, because I didn't have any rings until now. Very nice.

I got a suprising call today, from Kristen. She asked me to come online, so I did, more from curiosity than anything else. We've been talking for a bit, she's still living with Carlos. Now her mixed up brother Josh is staying with them as well. *Kristen was a childhood friend from a rough family life who ended up living with us for six years. She moved out last year to live in a run down apartment with a guy she had only been dating for three weeks. She seems to be upset today, sorry for all that has happened, She honestly left so suddenly, and with little consideration for the family who put so much love and trust her way that we all just felt kind of hurt afterward. Then she decided not to talk to us all year. I guess now she feels bad. Who would want to live like that is my question. But I did my best to support her and cheer her up, that's all that can be done. She's planning on spending Christmas alone as well, which is very sad. I don't know what to do...

We're making homemade pizzas for dinner tonight, should be fun. I'm still feeling a little off but hopefully it will be better by tomorrow!

More later!

First day of winter.

Well Friday afternoon and night was crazy. The snow was unbelievable coming down at three to four inches per hour at times. I think we got about a foot altogether. I made sure that the walkweays and driveway was clear by the time mom was to come home, that was quite a job. She definitely appreciated it though.

I woke up early Saturday morning very sick. I caught the awful flu...which has pretty much kept me down ever since. I am just now getting energy enough to stay awake. This is the first time I've been able to sit up long enough to check my email. I hope this ends soon.

Laura and Nicole are coming tomorrow morning, and the holiday festivities will begin. Tonight we are going to a candle lit Christmas church service. Hopefully after that I will be able to do gift wrapping, as I've been too sick to do it as of yet.

Going to go rest now. More later.

Snow!

Well, what a dramatic start to a storm! Within ten minutes from the first flake, snow was flying sideways, and the ground was already white! They certainly kept their word with this one.
Once a little more comes down, I will go out and start clearing things. My father is very picky about snow removal, and since he is sick, I need to make sure I do a devent job. So every inch or so I will clear off the sidewalk. The driveway is another matter however.

I've been trying to figure out how to get a new computer. I called Dell today, and they helped me pick out a good one to meet my needs. Just a desktop, no monitor, but it has a good processor, and alot of memory. Just under 700 dollars, but I don't qualify for financing, so I don't know how that is going to work. We'll see.

Finally on Break!

Well everything is done, and I am finally on break! I got home yesterday afternoon. glad to be done with school for a bit, and away from everything so I can just relax. Molly has been following me all around the house; I think she likes having my undivided attention. And honestly, its nice to be around a dog, really helping me cope with the doglessness.

Last night I spent some time with mom. I made a batch of chocolate chip cookies, and we watched the chipmunks movie, which was not as bad as I would have expected. It was nice to have a night off. :)

Today my dad is sick unfortunately. He's taking it easy, so its pretty much quiet around here. Not for the whole day, as we have some BIG snow coming our way! It is going to start in the early afternoon, and snow heavily (1-2 inches an hour) past midnight! It will be nice to have snow, even nicer not having anywhere to go!

At some point today or tonight, I will wrap gifts. Right now I am just enjoying the relaxation. Until I become a human snow plow that is. :)

More later!
